Little Shop of Horrors
Clumsy flower shop assistants, beat-up blond beauties, sadistic dentists, and, oh yeah, a man-eating plant from outer space. This play has everything. It's the story of Seymour, an orphan who was raised by the owner of the Mushnik's Skid Row Florists, who finds a strange plant that he names the Audrey II, after his beautiful (if not a bit ditzy) co-worker. He has a crush on the original Audrey, but she is dating a deranged dentist named Orin who's obsessed with pain. After putting the "strange and interesting new plant" in the shop window, business takes off for the failing store, and Seymour finds himself in the spotlight. However, what the world doesn't know is that Seymour discovered that the plant feeds off blood, and that it learned to talk and is demanding food. Since the plant is the new life-line of the store (and Seymour, Audrey, and Mr. Mushnik's cash flow), Seymour has no choice to feed it. However, when he can no longer supply his own blood, he is forced to off Audrey's no-good boyfriend and turn him into plant food. Mr. Mushnik is soon to follow when he wizes up to Seymour's dirty deed. In the end, Seymour and Audrey do end up together (as all good stories should end), but not in quite the way one would expect. You'll have to see the play to know what I'm talking about. The movie has a more story-book ending that I don't like quite as much, but it'll do.
